Every child deserves to feel understood. That’s what prompted Sarah Moore, a former classroom teacher and IMSE Level 5 Orton-Gillingham Master Instructor since 2022, to write a children’s book that talks about dyslexia in an inspiring new way. By writing Daisy T-Rex Is Dyslexic, Sarah has supplied an unmet need in children’s literature: the need for a book that not only reassures dyslexic children about their place in the world but also educates others about what dyslexia truly is.
The impetus to write the book came over Sarah when she saw her dyslexic daughter struggling to find belonging and self-confidence in school. Reminded of the journey many of her former students had gone through, Sarah began to search for books written to help children process the experience of dyslexia. To her shock, there were none. Soon after, she chose the character of a plucky first-grade dinosaur to champion her cause, and she set out to illustrate that dyslexia is not something to be ashamed of but simply a learning difference often linked to creativity and intelligence.
Because dyslexia is common, affecting up to 1 in 5 people, Daisy T-Rex has the potential to lift up millions of dyslexic students by changing how dyslexia is perceived. Through her story, Sarah teaches kids that their worth isn’t defined by how easily they can read, but rather by their character and personality. The book also gives visibility to common coping strategies, such as pretending to read by copying peers’ reactions, so that dyslexic students realize they are not alone. The book also highlights the hereditary nature of dyslexia and guides other children on how to support their dyslexic friends, fostering empathy and inclusion.
Sarah’s dream is for Daisy T-Rex to be on every bookshelf, whether in a home, classroom, or library. Despite its prevalence, dyslexia remains widely misunderstood. By raising awareness and promoting understanding, Sarah hopes more children will be properly diagnosed and supported by knowledgeable educators. Her book represents an important step toward a future where dyslexia is seen without stigma, and where all children, regardless of their reading abilities, are given the opportunity to succeed.
